Thanks to an impressive 2008 season and an even more impressive summer, the Bishop Gorman Gaels begin the year as the No. 1 team in the inaugural MaxPreps Xcellent Baseball Rankings.
In addition to winning their third straight Nevada 4A state championship last year, many of the Bishop Gorman players also competed on an American Legion team that won the World Series. With many of the team’s top pitchers and hitters returning from those two squads, the Gaels were an easy choice for the top spot.
The Gaels will get plenty of competition from the likes of Farragut, Don Bosco Prep and Coppell. Farragut returns all of the top players from last year’s team that won the Tennessee state championship. Meanwhile Don Bosco has not lost a game in over two years. Then there’s Coppell, which boasts six Division I prospects on a team ranked No. 1 in the Texas preseason rankings.
About the Rankings: MaxPreps already provides the most comprehensive high school sports ratings with the MaxPreps National Rankings presented by the National Guard, a computer model developed by Ned Freeman. Now, it’s time to get the human element involved.
Each week during the baseball season, Kevin Askeland will run down the top 25 high school baseball teams in the country – weighing record, quality wins and losses and other factors to determine the nation’s elite.
MaxPreps Preseason Xcellent 25
1. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), 41-3
The Gaels won their third straight Nevada 4A championship last year and seem destined to add a mythical national championship in 2009. With five returning players who have committed to play at the Division I level next year, including Gatorade State Player of the Year Jeff Malm, the Gaels have a deep team that boasts a solid pitching staff to go with a devastating hitting attack. Malm leads the way at first base with a .564 batting average that included 73 RBI and seven home runs. He was also 7-2 on the mound with a 2.76 ERA. Joey Rickard, meanwhile, was 7-0 on the mound with a 2.08 ERA and also led the team in home runs with 12 while batting .489 with 54 RBI. Top pitcher Stephen Manthei also returns. He was 9-0 last year with a 2.23 ERA. Other returning starters include junior Johnny Field at second base (.431-5-32), junior shortstop Corey Lafler (.376-0-22), junior outfielder Neil Lawhorn (.400-5-41) and sophomore catcher Erik Van Meetren (.338-2-18).
2. Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), 43-3
The Admirals have won four state championships since 2003 and have appeared in the state finals seven of the past 10 seasons. Farragut has the firepower necessary to make a return trip to the state championships, thanks to the return of Knoxville-area player of the year Curt Powell at shortstop, along with several other Division I prospects. Powell batted .493 last season with 56 RBI and eight home runs. Meanwhile third baseman Cade Stallings, who will play at Louisville next season, had nine home runs and drove in 52 RBI. He also had a .462 batting average with 14 doubles. The pitching staff should be the best in the state, headed by senior Jordan Cooper (who is headed to Mississippi) and sophomore Phillip Pfeifer. Cooper was 7-1 last year with a 2.08 ERA. He struck out 85 batters in 51 innings. Meanwhile Pfeifer is one of the nation’s top sophomores after posting a 13-1 record with a 1.14 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 68 innings as a freshman. Pfeifer earned District 4-AAA pitcher of the year honors.

He’ll handle a talented staff that includes district MVP Zak Hermans (7-0, 1.05 ERA), all-district pitcher Danny Malone and Austin Elkins (.468, 8 HR), the district offensive player of the year. Nearly the entire infield returns with Elkins back at third,
Oklahoma prospect Chad Kettler (.410, 28 RBI) at shortstop and district defensive player of the year Greg Higginbotham back at second base. The Cowboys are ranked the preseason No. 1 in
