Basketball Recap: Cabrillo Takes a Loss

If Cabrillo was riding high fresh off their 49-27 takedown of Baldwin Park last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cabrillo Jaguars had to suffer through a 66-32 loss at the hands of the Laguna Beach Breakers. The Jaguars' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Cabrillo's loss on Tuesday came despite strong showings from Alliyha Barredo and Melody Toney. Barredo posted 11 points and five assists, while Toney earned 12 points and three steals. Toney is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least three every time she's taken the court this season.

Laguna Beach found their leader in freshman Fiona McCormick, who had 35 points. With that strong performance, McCormick is now averaging an impressive 17.2 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Kate Cheng, who posted 14 points.

Cabrillo's loss dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Laguna Beach, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 4-3 record this season.

Cabrillo didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 59-34 win against California Academy of Math & Science on the 6th. As for Laguna Beach, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 45-39 victory against Santa Ana on the 7th.
