Rodgers was the third shortstop selected after Vanderbilt's Dansby Swanson went to the Arizona Diamondbacks with the No. 1 pick and Alex Bregman of LSU went to the Houston Astros with the No. 2 overall selection.
The No. 1 high school prospect at the beginning of the season, Rodgers never budged from that spot all season long. He batted .360 for Lake Mary with 23 RBIs, eight doubles and eight home runs in 25 games played. He helped lead Lake Mary to a 15-12 overall record.
Rodgers edged out fellow high school standouts
Dazmon Cameron of
Eagle's Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.),
Kyle Tucker of
Plant (Tampa, Fla.) and
Trent Clark of
Richland (North Richland Hills, Texas), all of whom were considered to be among the top 12 selections in this year's draft.
Swanson played his high school baseball at Marietta (Ga.), graduating in 2012. He was a 38th-round draft pick by the Colorado Rockies as a prep. Meanwhile, Bregman was a MaxPreps All-American at Albuquerque Academy (N.M.). He was selected with the No. 901 overall pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2012.
