See some of the dunks from an entertaining night in ChicagoIf you're going to do things right and win a slam dunk contest, it's better to use professionals. Or at least an All-American.
And probably not a clown.
Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) standout and National Player of the Year candidate
Dwayne Bacon used East teammate
Isaiah Briscoe and former NBA standout Jalen Rose for a couple of his high-flying slam dunks to win the 2015 POWERADE Jamfest Dunk Contest Monday at the University of Chicago.
Briscoe threw a ball perfectly off the side of the board, where Bacon cupped the ball and flew in for a spectacular opening dunk. Somehow he got only 69 out of 70, but he said it was the key to his championship.
"A lot of people were missing their first dunk and I went up there focused on making my first dunk," said the Florida State signee.
He eventually made it to the finals against
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 7-footer
Stephen Zimmerman, who opened with a perfect 70 when, with his back to the basket from the free throw line, he bounced the ball off the backboard and tomahawked it down.
By the finals, the uncommitted Zimmerman trailed by just six points so he figured he needed to pull out all the stops. He brought in Ronald McDonald to flip the ball up to the wiry and long-limbed senior.
Mr. McDonald, however, couldn't flip it high enough and Zimmerman failed on several attempts. Superb and thoughtful idea. Just not enough practice.
All Bacon needed to do was a 1960-style two-handed dunk from 2 feet away to win, but instead he went for some showmanship. He asked Rose to stand at the bottom of the key and Bacon easily vaulted over Rose's shoulders and ripped home a right-hander that sent everyone home happy.
Except maybe Ronald.
Other winners on the night were local boy
Jaylen Brown (Villanova recruit) in the boys skills contest,
Napheesa Collier (Connecticut) in the girls skills contest,
Luke Kennard (Duke) in the boys 3-point shootout and
Asia Durr, (Louisville) in the girls 3-point shootout.
