The Sunnyside Wildcats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their ninth straight defeat. They fell just short of Torres by a score of 46-43. Sunnyside has struggled against the Toros recently, as their game on Thursday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
When it comes to explaining why Sunnyside lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ruby Cartwright. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 18 points and 16 rebounds. Cartwright hasn't dropped below two steals for 23 straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Nicole Xiong, who scored seven points.
Sunnyside struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Torres racked up 15 assists.
Torres got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was J'Lynn Mitchell out in front who scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Mitchell continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Sabrina Cerrillo was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with three steals.
Sunnyside has not been sharp recently as the team's lost 13 of their last 14 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-19 record this season. As for Torres, their win bumped their record up to 16-10.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sunnyside will square off against the Patriots at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The timing is sure in Hoover's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while the Wildcats have been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road. As for Torres, they will challenge the Hornets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Sanger West has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
