Video: San Ysidro beats Coronado in section championshipMikey Williams and Jurian Dixon lead the Cougars to San Diego Section Division III title.
High school basketball freshman phenom Mikey Williams
isn't just a social media sensation.
He's also proving to be a winner.
Battling through cramps for much of the second half, the 6-foot-4 guard scored 16 points Thursday night to help San Ysidro (San Diego)
beat Coronado 71-59 and capture the San Diego Section Division III championship.
Another San Ysidro freshman, 6-5 Jurian Dixon
, stepped up with a monster performance while Williams struggled through the cramping, finishing with 32 points and 21 rebounds.
San Ysidro (24-8) opened its doors in 2002 and had never won a section title. The Cougars will continue their season next week in the Division III state tournament. Brackets will be announced Sunday.
Williams entered the game averaging 30.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He scored a section record 77 points in a win over Kearny in mid-December.
Dixon wasn't too far behind on the season with averages of 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Thursday's victory extended San Ysidro's win streak to 15 games. The Cougars scored 90 points or more in 12 of those outings.
