The Santa Maria Saints suffered their biggest loss since November 18, 2023 on Tuesday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 47-27 walloping at the hands of Cabrillo. While losing is never fun, Santa Maria can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 462nd, while Cabrillo is ranked 220th).
Santa Maria lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Nevaeh Madrigal, who scored five points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Reyes, who scored five points along with two steals.
Santa Maria struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Cabrillo's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Natalie McCune, who scored six points along with 12 rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Angeliyah Gonzalez, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Santa Maria and nudges their season record down to 14-7. As for Cabrillo, they pushed their record up to 14-4 with that win, which was their sixth straight at home.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Santa Maria will square off against Mission College Prep at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Mission College Prep focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Tuesday. As for Cabrillo, they will head out on the road to challenge Paso Robles at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
