After each having a week off, the Greenwich Cardinals and the Staples Wreckers will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Greenwich's defense has only allowed 11.2 points per game this season, so Staples' offense will have their work cut out for them.
Greenwich is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Darien, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Greenwich was ranked fifth). The Cardinals blew past the Blue Wave 35-14 last Friday. Considering the Cardinals have won five matchups by more than 20 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Greenwich found their leader in sophomore Andy Stedem, who picked up 3.5 sacks, made seven total tackles (4.0 for loss), and defended one pass. Another player making a difference was Hector Lopez, who rushed for 114 yards.

Greenwich didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nico Galindo and Justin Carroll. Carroll is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in each of the last 22 games he's played dating back to last season. Stedem was another major factor on D, picking up 3.5 sacks, making seven total tackles (4.0 for loss), and defending one pass.
Meanwhile, Staples was not able to break out of their rough patch last Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 28-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of Ludlowe. While the Wreckers had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Falcons 7-0.
Greenwich's win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 9.1 points on average over those games. As for Staples, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Greenwich strolled past Staples in their previous meeting back in December of 2024 by a score of 14-0. Do the Cardinals have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wreckers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
