Hayward is 0-10 against San Leandro since April of 2016 but things could change on Wednesday. The Farmers will look to defend their home field against the Pirates at 4:00 p.m.
Hayward is headed into Wednesday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their sixth straight game on Tuesday. They lost 10-0 to Berkeley.
Meanwhile, San Leandro came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Grizzlies with a sharp 14-1 win. 14 seems to be a good number for the Pirates as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Lorenzo Charles made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). Charles was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Gary Ferguson was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He has become a key player for San Leandro: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Orta, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
San Leandro kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.4.
San Leandro's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Hayward, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-14.
Hayward might still be hurting after the 8-2 loss they got from San Leandro in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Farmers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
