The St. John Woodchucks will finish 2023 at home by hosting the Velva Aggies at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully St. John focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 last Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, St. John narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Benson County [Leeds/Maddock] 50-48.
St. John's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Aston Parisien led the charge by scoring 14 points along with three steals. Parisien is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Simon LaRocque, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Velva's recent rough patch got a bit rougher last Saturday after their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They lost to Garrison on the road by a decisive 72-56 margin. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
St. John's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Velva, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.
St. John came up short against Velva when the teams last played back in December of 2022, falling 74-67. Will St. John have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
