Hope extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to five on Monday, dropping them down to 0-4. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 11-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the Tiverton Tigers. On the bright side, the nine- run performance marked the Blue Wave's highest-scoring matchup to date.
Bryan Abreu made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Chris Bernard was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
Tiverton's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-4. Their offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last three games.
On Tiverton's side, Aiden Sylvia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Sylvia has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Those hits marked the first that he has got this season.
In other batting news, Tiverton let Alex Monkevicz and Sylas Carilile run wild. Monkevicz went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double, while Carilile went 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those hits were Monkevicz's first of the season. Another player making a difference was Nolan Mercer, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Hope will square off against rival Central Falls at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tiverton is set to challenge their familiar foe Juanita Sanchez Complex at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
