Fans got a thrill when Brett Johnson and Hunter Hulley connected against Norwood-Young America. The connection went for 68 yards, the longest such play in Minnesota River this season.
Tri-City United [Montgomery-Lonsdale/Le Center] added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Sibley East, 47-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Mayer Lutheran's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Cole Buttenhoff threw for 226 and 4 touchdowns and Anthony Gruenhagen had 204 yards receiving. On the ground Joel Burfeind contributed 120 yards.
He went 9-17 with 2 interceptions.
Buttenhoff put up the best numbers in passing as the Crusaders fell to Belle Plaine. Buttenhoff's favorite target this week was Gruenhagen, who caught 6 passes for 204 yards.
Mayer Lutheran's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Crusaders feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Buttenhoff has thrown for 573 yards and 7 touchdowns this season, while Gruenhagen has 25 catches for 439 yards.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Watertown-Mayer takes on Tri-City United [Montgomery-Lonsdale/Le Center]. As it stands, the Royals are in third, while the Titans are in first.
The Tigers moved up to 76 from 102 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Minnesota River. Belle Plaine was able to move up by beating Mayer Lutheran 35-31.
