Video: Trevor Lawrence highlights
Watch the nation's No. 2 recruit and quarterback shred another secondary earlier this season.
The illustrious career of
Trevor Lawrence ended quite a bit earlier than expected.
The nation's No. 2-ranked quarterback watched
Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.) score with 12 seconds left to play on a 26-yard pass, from
Jake Smith to
Ryan Davis, giving the visiting Titans a 21-17 GHSA AAAA quarterfinal victory over
Cartersville (Ga.).
It snapped a 41-game win streak by the Hurricanes, a two-year title run and the career of Lawrence, who during the last month broke two Georgia career passing records previously held by Deshaun Watson.
Lawrence, ranked the second best recruit overall in the country by 247Sports, was hoping to end his career with three straight titles.
Instead Cartersville ended (11-1) ended four wins short, which would have given Lawrence plenty of time to stretch his career state records. Blessed Trinity, ranked 17th in Georgia, is 10-2.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Clemson-bound star entered the game almost perfect during his senior year, having completed 161 of 227 (71 percent) for 3,148 yards, 40 touchdowns and one interception.
Before Friday, he had thrown for state records of 13,760 yards and 160 touchdowns. He closed with very pedestrian numbers: 16 of 29 for 148 yards and a touchdown.
Blessed Trinity coach Tim McFarlin told the
Daily Tribune said the key to containing Lawrence was fairly simple: "We wanted to get pressure on Trevor because he's, I think, without a doubt, the best quarterback prospect in the country."
Clemson-bound Trevor Lawrence will go down as one of Georgia's great quarterbacks, but his career ended suddenly with a 21-17 upset loss to Blessed Trinity on Friday night.
