Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Skyline). They came out on top against the Gateway Olympians by a score of 80-70 on Saturday.
Skyline got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Johnny McCray out in front who went 6 for 10 en route to 17 points in addition to eight boards and six steals. The dominant performance gave McCray a new career-high in points. Davon Esparza also deserves some recognition as he scored his first points of the season.
Skyline smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.
Gateway lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Ahmed Mohammed, who went 9 of 16 on his way to 27 points and five rebounds. Mohammed continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nickalus Smith, who posted 21 points along with eight assists and six boards.
Skyline's win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-9. As for Gateway, their loss dropped their record down to 5-12.
It'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Skyline Falcons challenge the Horizon Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Horizon knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past nine games -- so hopefully Skyline likes a good challenge. As for Gateway, they will head out on the road to take on Aurora Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Aurora Central is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.5 points per game this season.
