Football Recap: Dynamic Duo of Cooper Melvin and Aiden Grabowski Lead Westfield to Victory

Westfield had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They walked away with a 20-10 victory over the Fishers Tigers on Friday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 14-7 back in October.

While passing duties were split, you can't argue with the impact Aiden Grabowski and Cooper Melvin both made on the game. Grabowski rushed for 91 yards and one touchdown while Melvin rushed for 83 yards on only five carries. Those 83 rushing yards gave Melvin a new career-high.

Westfield's run defense was locked in: Fishers could only muster 3.2 yards per carry. While two picked up at least seven total tackles, Zane Newman stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks and made seven total tackles. Westfield didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged six.

Westfield's defense didn't let Gage Sturgill, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Leading the way was Newman with two. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven.

Fishers lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Sturgill, who threw for 128 yards and one TD, and also rushed for 55 yards. Fishers also got a significant boost from Ryan Thembulembu, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 80 yards.

Westfield pushed their record up to 10-2 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 12.3 points on average over those games. As for Fishers, with the defeat, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 8-4.

Looking ahead, Westfield will take on Carroll at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Shamrocks will need to watch out since the Chargers have now posted at least 31 points in their last seven matchups. Fishers does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
