The Monte Vista Monarchs had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 52-45 win over Mount Miguel on Friday. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Monte Vista also won the last time the pair played on January 12th.
Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes dropped a double-double on 30 points and 14 rebounds. That was a full 66.7% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 23rd time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. AJ Jones was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Monte Vista's victory bumped their record up to 10-13. As for Mount Miguel, they dropped their record down to 4-20 with that defeat, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season.
Monte Vista will be playing at home against Granite Hills at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant players against one another: Kerstena Tomika and Jazmyn Montague. As for Mount Miguel, they will head out on the road to square off against Grossmont at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Grossmont presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Mount Miguel in California (Grossmont is ranked 216th, while Mount Miguel is ranked 1214th).
