South El Monte is 9-1 against Rosemead since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Eagles will face off against the Panthers at 3:30 p.m.
On Monday, South El Monte didn't have quite enough to beat Mary Star of the Sea and fell 6-5.
Matthew Velazquez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Velazquez was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
In other batting news, Elijah Benavidez was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Emiliano Gonzalez was another key player, earning two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Rosemead took on El Monte on Friday. The Panthers blew past the Lions 13-3. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
Like South El Monte, Rosemead also got a great game from a two-way player: Anthony Ruiz. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Ruiz also tossed no walks, which is notable because Rosemead is 5-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 8-9 otherwise. Ruiz was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Logan Mojica and Juleean Pinto did most of the damage at the plate: Mojica got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Pinto went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Pinto has become a key player for Rosemead: the team is 7-3 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Lucas Mojica, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Rosemead was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.
South El Monte's defeat dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Rosemead, their record is now 13-10.
South El Monte skirted past Rosemead 8-7 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
