Eleven of the teams ranked in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school softball rankings have wrapped up state tournament play and nine more will finish this week.
Doral Academy (Doral) capped a remarkable season by capturing Florida's Class 6A state championship with a 1-0 win over a talented
Pace squad. The Firebirds loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and
Meagan Villazon drew a walk to bring in the game's only run. Villazon also tossed a one-hitter while striking out seven, including the game's final out, to seal the title.
In a battle between MaxPreps Top 25 teams in California, No. 15
Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) rallied to beat No. 24
Del Oro (Loomis) 3-2 to win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 title. Santa Clara commit
Ellison Schroeder and a strong Trojan defense held off a potent Del Oro lineup.
Emery Glaser delivered a bases-loaded double in the top of the sixth, bringing in two key runs.
Staying in California, No. 6
Norco will face newcomer No. 16
El Modena (Orange) in the Southern Section Division 1 championship Saturday night — a rematch of the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions final from March 5, where El Modena won 6-5.
Texas state championships also get underway this weekend. One of the most highly-anticipated matchups is No. 1
Melissa vs. No. 8
Barbers Hill (Mt. Belvieu) in the Conference 5A Division 1 title game, which will have national championship implications as well. Both teams are loaded with top-tier talent.
Also in Texas, No. 18
Forney will take on No. 21
Kingwood for the Conference 6A Division 2 crown. Forney dropped game one to
Denton Guyer but stormed back to win the next two.
Cailey Slade hit an inside-the-park home run that drove in three runs to seal a 6-3 victory in game three. Kingwood, meanwhile, exploded for 23 hits and 16 runs to sweep
Dripping Springs.
