The Mount Academy Eagles are still undefeated this season after their match against the Millbrook Blazers on Monday, but the Millbrook Blazers came as close as anyone has to beating them. Mount Academy skirted past Millbrook 74-71. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
It was another big night for Jake Maendel, who dropped a double-double on 35 points and ten rebounds. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Donovan Baird, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Millbrook's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Owen Iannucci, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 12 rebounds, and Andrew Szostak who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and five blocks. Iannucci scored a full 39.4% of Millbrook's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Even though they lost, Millbrook were working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Mount Academy's win ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 5-0. As for Millbrook, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-2.
Mount Academy will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Pine Plains at 5:45 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Pine Plains will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New York Rankings (they are ranked 372nd, while Mount Academy is ranked 83rd). Millbrook will be home for the holidays to greet Hawthorne Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
