The San Ysidro Cougars will take on the Canyon Hills Rattlers in a holiday battle at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: San Ysidro has struggled recently with five defeats in a row, while Canyon Hills will arrive with five straight victories.
Last Wednesday, things could have been worse for San Ysidro, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 42-27 loss to Mar Vista.
Despite the loss, San Ysidro saw an underclassman step up: Kristine Fadriquela scored 21 points. Fadriquela scored a full 77.8% of San Ysidro's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Natalie Martinez was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Canyon Hills beat Holtville 28-24 on Saturday.
Canyon Hills' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Annalisa Parker, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 18 rebounds. The contest was Parker's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Lucia Arlotto, who scored three points along with eight steals.
San Ysidro bumped their record down to 0-4 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 21.8 points per game. As for Canyon Hills, their win bumped their record up to 7-3.
San Ysidro barely slipped by Canyon Hills in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, winning 40-39. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Canyon Hills' Alexis Cox, who scored eight points along with 28 rebounds and three steals.
