The Columbine Rebels will head out on the road to challenge the Chatfield Chargers at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Columbine is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Columbine is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Colorado's top teams: Valor Christian, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Columbine was ranked fifth). The Rebels blew past the Eagles 8-2 on Wednesday. Eight seems to be a good number for the Rebels as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Addison Swenby spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Melanie Newcomb, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in September. Another player making a difference was Mason Abraham, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
Chatfield came out on top against Lakewood on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Chargers walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Tigers.
Chatfield also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Jessyca Vargas gave up only one earned run on five hits and racked up ten Ks. Vargas has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Annabelle Beikmann was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. Avry Aukland was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Columbine's win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-5. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Chatfield, their record now sits at 8-11.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Columbine hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Chatfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Everything went Columbine's way against Chatfield in their previous meeting back in September, as Columbine made off with a 16-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rebels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
