Ralston Valley had lost six straight, but after bumping their record up to 6-13 on Saturday that streak is in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Valor Christian Eagles 16-14. The Mustangs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Nina Renk made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and ten unearned) runs off 11 hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, Ralston Valley got a massive performance out of Ella Felix, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those four hits gave Felix a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Stella Emnott, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Ralston Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
As for Valor Christian, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat they have suffered since August 16th.
Like Ralston Valley, Valor Christian also got a great game from a two-way player: Elizabeth Canales. She struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Canales has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
In other batting news, Kendall Ferguson and Annie Bieser stepped up to the plate in a big way. Ferguson went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one triple, and one double, while Bieser went 4-for-5 with four runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Bieser has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Whidden, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and one double.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Ralston Valley is set to face off against their familiar foe Columbine at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Valor Christian will take on rival Lakewood at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
