Paramount is 1-9 against Downey since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Paramount Pirates will square off against the Downey Vikings at 3:15 p.m. Neither Paramount nor Downey posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.
Paramount is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since April 4, 2024 on Tuesday. They came up short against Norwalk, falling 8-1. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Pirates' biggest loss of the season was also their lowest-scoring.
Paramount got a good showing from Jeramy Quezada, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
At the plate, Paramount saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Luis Banuelos, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Downey waltzed into their match on Monday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 2-1 W against the Jackrabbits. While the Vikings didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Jeff Pinal looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched.
Downey pushed their record up to 7-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Paramount, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.
Paramount's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's game. Paramount has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Downey, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Paramount continue to outrun the ball?
Paramount couldn't quite get it done against Downey when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 7-3. Can Paramount avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
