A feisty cat fight will be fought as the Panthers face off against the Jaguars at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Petal's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so DeSoto Central's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Petal's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They walked away with a 3-0 victory over Greene County.
Not much got past Mallory Johnson, who gave up just a hit and racked up ten Ks to keep Greene County off the board. What's more, Johnson gave up only one walk, the fewest she's had since back in February of 2024.
On the hitting side, Petal saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Morgan Taylor, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask DeSoto Central). They were the clear victor by an 18-2 margin over West Jones on Friday. The win was just business as usual for the Jaguars, who after four games remain undefeated this season.
Lucy Gaffney looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. What's more, she posted four strikeouts, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, Londen Armstrong was a standout: she scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. She also hit a triple, marking her first of the season. Makayla Jamison was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3.
DeSoto Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Petal has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. DeSoto Central's record is now 4-0.
