Mira Mesa had lost six games on the road, but after bumping their record up to 9-10 on Thursday that streak is in the rearview. They walked away with a 10-7 win over the Christian Patriots. The Marauders' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Caleb Gerlach was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has become a key player for Mira Mesa: the team is 4-2 when he allows at most one hit, but 5-8 otherwise. Gerlach was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Nathaniel Widelski was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mira Mesa's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-2 (and 5-8 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Rothrock, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Mira Mesa was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .432. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
As for Christian, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. They have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
On Christian's side, Chase Togerson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Braeden Casey was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Mira Mesa is set to challenge their familiar foe Coronado at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Christian will face off against rival University City at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Patriots 4, the Centurions 2.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
