Video: Which state plays the best prep football?
MaxPreps' analyst Zack Poff and Steve Montoya offer the facts.
The great and never-ending debate in high school football continues into 2020.
Which of the Big 3 — California, Florida or Texas — plays the best brand?
MaxPreps national football editor Zack Poff and expert Steve Montoya take on the great debate during a recent CBS Sports HQ Show in the video above
With five, California is tied with Texas for most Top 25 preseason teams, led by No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana)
and No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower)
. The Golden State also claims 15 squads among the Top 100 and the No. 1 recruit nationally, according to 247Sports composite, is defensive end Korey Foreman
of No. 15 Centennial (Corona)
Texas maintains the most Top 100 teams in the country with 17 and the most players (40) from the 247Sports Top 100 list from the Class of 2021. Among them is dual-threat quarterback Dematrius Davis Jr.
of North Shore (Houston)
, the nation's No. 5 team and the two-time defending state 6A-1 champion.
Though Florida trails, barely, in all those categories — four top 25 teams, 14 top 100 squads and 35 top 100 players are from the Sunshine State. It also claims the No. 1 team in the country, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
and No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
, with the Raiders having the most alumni on current NFL rosters.
"When you talk about sheer talent, you can't go against the (Florida)," Poff said.
Add it all up and it's one big discourse.
