South River had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 16-9 to make it four. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sayreville Bombers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Rams of the 10-6 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2025.
Travis Maloney made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Joshua Devers was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
As for Sayreville, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-13-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games.
On Sayreville's side, Chase Cannan made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched. Cannan has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double marked the first that he has hit this season.
In other pitching news, Robert Kontos looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Trevor Yan, who got on base in three of his six plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. Sayreville is 2-1 when Yan posts two or more runs, but 7-12-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of KJ Stevens, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs.
Coming up, South River will square off against Monmouth Regional at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Sayreville, they will challenge Woodbridge at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
