Hobbs gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They breezed past the Lovington Wildcats to the tune of 41-13. For the Eagles, this counts as revenge for the 31-22 win the Wildcats walked away with the last time they faced one another back in August of 2024.
Shamus Wright had a dynamite game, rushing for 238 yards and three TDs on only 14 carries. Those three rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Junior Medrano, who rushed for 87 yards and one score on only 11 carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Hobbs was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 389 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lovington only rushed for 133 rushing yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Hobbs' defense and their four sacks. Leading the way was Jeremiah Mackey with two. Hobbs got some further help from Aidan Gluhm: he picked up a sack and made 17 total tackles.
Lovington's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Justin Allen, who threw for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Zachary Diaz handled things on the ground, rushing for 91 yards.
Hobbs wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 51-41 loss against Artesia on the 29th. As for Lovington, they have also already played their next contest, a 49-24 victory against Portales on the 29th.
