Calexico dropped their record down to 23-5-1 on Saturday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the University City Centurions, falling 12-1. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Bulldogs, who until this match were averaging 3.28 runs allowed.
Randy Baez was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases. Another player making a difference was Ander Garcia, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.
As for University City, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 20-12. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On University City's side, Nolan Nunes and AJ Curry were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Nunes pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Curry struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Nunes has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Nunes went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Curry went 2-for-4 with one triple and one run. Those two runs gave Nunes a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ethan Antenore, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Jayden Parker was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run.
