Basketball Recap: Eva Cruz's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Point Loma over Crawford

Point Loma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 38-32 heartbreaker at the hands of the Crawford Colts. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pointers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 26-12 back in January.

Point Loma lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Eva Cruz, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine rebounds. Cruz has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Avery Heckman, who posted nine points and eight boards.

Even though they lost, Point Loma smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

It was another big night for Fatuma Abdi, who earned 11 points and five steals for Crawford. With that strong performance, Abdi is now averaging an impressive 2 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Suraya Mumin, who had six points and five rebounds.

Point Loma's defeat dropped their record down to 4-16. As for Crawford, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 12-13.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Point Loma will welcome Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 12 games -- so hopefully Point Loma likes a good challenge. As for Crawford, they will be playing at home against Madison at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Madison has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
