The Pickens Dragons were the 27-10 winner over the Gilmer Bobcats when they last played one another back in October of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. Pickens took a 35-24 hit to the loss column at the hands of Gilmer on Friday. Pickens' defeat continues a unfortunate trend for the team, making it six in a row.
Despite the defeat, Pickens had strong showings from Sam Streicher, who rushed for 16 yards and two touchdowns, and Hayden Jones, who picked up 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Jones' longest reception was for an incredible 70 yards.
Gilmer was led to victory by Peyton Chancey and Issac Rellinger. Chancey rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown, while Rellinger rushed for 90 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries.
Pickens' defeat was their third straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 2-6. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 9-3 Hebron Christian Academy (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 62% over those games). As for Gilmer, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Pickens will take on West Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. West Hall is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak. As for Gilmer, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Dawson County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
