Baseball Recap: Leadership Public Schools Richmond Comes Up Short

Leadership Public Schools Richmond was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Making Waves Academy Marlins. If the Pumas were looking for revenge after losing 10-3 to the Marlins when the teams met back in February of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Rene Lopez put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't tossed less than ten strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

In other batting news, Kevin Montero made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole four bases while going 1-for-3. Leadership Public Schools Richmond is 2-1 when Montero posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-4 otherwise. Valentino Montero also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Leadership Public Schools Richmond now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Making Waves Academy, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 7-4-1.

Coming up, Leadership Public Schools Richmond will head out to take on Mare Island Tech Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Making Waves Academy, they will host Cornerstone Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Marlins are facing the Cougars at the right time seeing as the Cougars are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
