Montgomery County had won 13 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Thursday they bumped up to 8-1 to make it 14. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over the North Callaway Thunderbirds. For the Wildcats, this counts as revenge for the 9-0 win the Thunderbirds walked away with the last time they faced one another back in September of 2024.
Reese Hill spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, Montgomery County got a big performance out of Gracie Cobb, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Cobb a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kenley Wessel, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
As for North Callaway, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 12-6. Their loss signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
On North Callaway's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Megan Schmidt gave up four earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up six Ks. Schmidt has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kymorie Myers made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one triple. Madyson Gordon was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs.
Montgomery County didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 5-2 victory against Palmyra on the 27th. As for North Callaway, they have also already played their next matchup, a 14-4 defeat against Moberly on the 27th.
