Virginia Episcopal School came out on top against Roanoke Catholic on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run second inning. The Bishops put the hurt on the Celtics with a sharp 18-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Bishops, who have now won five games by six runs or more so far this season.
Jake Simms and Jaxon Godsie made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Simms tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Godsie pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Simms went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Godsie got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI Godsie has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lawrence Dempsey, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Nate Gobble was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Virginia Episcopal School always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .561. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Roanoke Catholic only posted an OBP of .176.
Virginia Episcopal School pushed their record up to 9-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.7 runs over those games. As for Eastern Mennonite, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Eastern Mennonite has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Virginia Episcopal School struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
