Basketball Recap: Steele Canyon Skates Past Helix with Ease

Steele Canyon hadn't done well against Helix recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Steele Canyon Cougars blew past the Helix Highlanders 62-34. For the Cougars, this counts as revenge for the 40-35 victory the Highlanders walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2022.

Steele Canyon's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amira Williams, who went 5 for 8 en route to 15 points. Williams is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Brianda Benitez, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 14 points in addition to eight assists and three steals.

Helix lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Cheyenne McMillan, who posted 12 points and four steals. Jordyn McMillan was another key player, putting up eight points and seven boards.

Steele Canyon's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-14. As for Helix, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Steele Canyon will head out to challenge Grossmont at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Grossmont is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.2 points per game this season. Helix has already played their next game (against Granite Hills), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
