The Freeport Yellowjackets will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the St. Joseph Spartans at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
On December 11th, Freeport came up short against Keystone Oaks and fell 56-48. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Freeport in their matchups with Keystone Oaks: they've now lost three in a row.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, St. Joseph's good fortune finally ran out last Monday. They took a 66-62 hit to the loss column at the hands of Aquinas Academy. While losing is never fun, St. Joseph can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 118th, while Aquinas Academy is ranked 31st).
St. Joseph might have lost, but man, Julie Spinelli was a machine: she dropped a double-double on 36 points and 12 rebounds. The contest was Spinelli's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Anna Kreinbrook, who scored four points along with ten blocks and nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, St. Joseph were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Freeport's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for St. Joseph, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2.
Freeport and St. Joseph were neck-and-neck when the teams last played back in December of 2022, but Freeport came up empty-handed after a 56-55 defeat. Can Freeport avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
