WINONA, Minn. -
Mayo (Rochester, Minn.) defeated
Winona (Minn.) 33-14 while riding the arm of
Jay Alston, who tossed four touchdown passes.
After taking the lead on a
Tommy Fjelsted touchdown run in the first quarter, the Spartans led 20-0 at the half.
Mayo grew its lead to 27 points entering the fourth quarter. MHS's lone score in the quarter came on a Alston touchdown pass to
Michael Michalak.
Alston and Michalak teamed up to form a great passing pair. Michalak caught three touchdowns and Alston threw four. Michalak has now caught three touchdowns this season, while Alston has thrown four.
The Rochester school came in allowing an average of 19.0 points per game this season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Winona, who notched a 21-14 victory over Mankato East in its previous outing. The win was a nice bounce back for the Spartans, who lost to Austin last week, 26-23.
Winona (2-5) will play a Big 9 game against Albert Lea next week, while Mayo (5-2) will take on Mankato West also in a Big 9 game.
