Video: Argyle wins second consecutive Texas state title
The Eagles enter 2020 with a 28-game win streak.
The two teams with the longest win streaks in the nation are only 135 miles apart in the southern Oklahoma and both look like favorites to extend their streaks in 2020.
Meanwhile two-time state champions Webster (Wisc.), Center Moriches (N.Y.) and Argyle (Texas) also figure to extend their 25-plus game win streaks at the beginning of the season along with De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), a school that's known more for its long football win streaks.Longest Baseball Win Streaks
1. Silo (Okla.) — 40
Winners of two straight Class A state championships, Silo, located near the Texas border, starts the year with the longest active win streak. The streak does not include the fall season in Oklahoma, where Silo went 29-4 and was ranked No. 1 in the state. The streak only includes the 33 wins Silo claimed in last year's spring season along with seven to finish the 2018 season. Silo again is the favorite in Class A for the Spring, thanks to the return of six players who have combined to participate on 20 state championship teams (fall and spring combined). Senior pitcher Carson Atwood
, an Oklahoma State signee, leads the way. Silo takes a trip to Florida during the spring, however, and could face IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). Other potential road blocks to the streak include instate foes Edmond Santa Fe, Dale, Red Oak and Latta.2. Blanchard (Okla.) — 39
Two hours north of Silo, just south of Oklahoma City, is Class 4A state champion Blanchard. The Lions posted the best record in the nation last year at 39-0 and finished ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Top 50 rankings. Blanchard returns MaxPreps All-American Bryce Madron
(.558, 12 HR) and might not be challenged until the Owasso tournament in early April. Blanchard has averaged 34 wins a season over the past five years.3. Webster (Wis.) — 37
If Silo and Blanchard stumble during March, Webster could be there to take over with the longest streak. The Tigers don't begin play until April and they have won two straight Division IV championships in Wisconsin. Head coach Jarrod Washburn, a 12-year Major League pitcher, guides a team that posted 20 shutouts last year and gave up 31 runs. Webster's top returning player is Washburn's son, Owen
, who earned all-state honors as a sophomore infielder last year while batting .561.4. Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.) — 35
The 59ers lost their second game of the season to Father Ryan at a tournament in Tennessee, but they didn't lose the rest of the season in winning their final 35 games and a Class 3A state championship. During the season, coach Dave Pishkur went over 1,000 career wins and became the state's all-time winningest coach. He returns the bulk of last season's championship team, except for MaxPreps All-American pitcher Michael Doolin.5. Center Moriches (N.Y.) — 32
The Red Devils have been the top Class B team in New York for the past two years, winning their final five games in 2018 en route to a state title and then going undefeated (27-0) in 2019 for a second straight crown. A three-peat might be difficult, however, as Center Moriches returns two players from last year's squad.6. (tie) Xavier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) — 28
Xavier may end up with the longest streak in 2020, but we won't know until late July as Iowa plays its season during the summer. Xavier won the Class 3A state championship and returns the bulk of last year's pitching staff.6. (tie) Argyle (Texas) — 28
The two-time national champions in the MaxPreps Top 50 Baseball Rankings extended its unbeaten streak to 50 games last year before falling to eventual Class 6A champion Carroll (Southlake). Argyle got right back to winning games, however, and finished the season with 28 straight wins and a Class 4A championship. The bulk of those back-to-back championship teams are gone, but Argyle still figures to be one of the top 4A teams in Texas in 2020.6. (tie) De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) — 28
The school known for a 151-game football win streak has fielded one of the most successful baseball programs in Northern California. Finishing No. 2 in the MaxPreps national computer rankings last year, De La Salle has reached the North Coast Section championship game nine straight years. They lost their second game of the season last year before rattling off 28 straight. The Spartans figure to be one of the Top 10 teams in the nation in 2020 as well.9. (tie) Colonel Richardson (Federalsburg, Md.) — 24
Colonel Richardson saw its streak almost come to an end on a number of occasions last year, winning eight games by one run and then winning the Maryland Class 1A championship game 6-0 in nine innings. The Colonels have gone 99-10 over the past five seasons and return half of the team from last year's unbeaten group.9. (tie) Los Banos (Calif.) — 24
If not for a 1-0 loss to perennial Sac-Joaquin powerhouse Buhach Colony, Los Banos would have gone undefeated last year at 29-0. Despite the loss, the Tigers still managed to win 24 straight and capture the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship.
