Pueblo County dropped down to 7-2 on Saturday, ending the team's six-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks by a score of 3-2. The Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Red-Tailed Hawks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.
Kamdyn Toussaint spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Erin Garcia and Rylie Sanchez did some serious damage despite the final result: Garcia went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Sanchez went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that Sanchez has snagged this season.
As for Cheyenne Mountain, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-1. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games.
On Cheyenne Mountain's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Addison Gutschick gave up just two earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. Gutschick has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Abbi Houger was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Another player making a difference was Michaela (MJ) Ewen, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Looking ahead, Pueblo County will be playing at home against Pueblo Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The last four games the Wildcats have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for Cheyenne Mountain, they will head out to challenge Rampart at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Red-Tailed Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rams have averaged an impressive 9.2 runs per game this season.
