South Kingstown has gone 9-1 against Cumberland recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Rebels will head out on the road to face off against the Clippers at 4:15 p.m. South Kingstown's pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so Cumberland's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
South Kingstown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: East Providence, who was ranked fifth at the time (South Kingstown was ranked third). The Rebels' pitchers stepped up to hand the Townies a 3-0 shutout on Tuesday. The win continues a trend for the Rebels in their matchups with the Townies: they've now won six in a row.
Connor Wokoske looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Brayden Rosen was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.
Meanwhile, Cumberland came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Falcons by a score of 5-0.
Ben Jahnz tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 15 over 6.2 innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Cumberland saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Andrew Nocera, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Cumberland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cranston West only posted a batting average of .231.
Cumberland pushed their record up to 17-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for South Kingstown, their record now sits at 17-5.
South Kingstown skirted past Cumberland 4-3 in their previous matchup back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rebels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
