The Mount Miguel Matadors's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their seventh straight loss. They were outmatched by El Capitan on the road and fell 77-29. While losing is never fun, Mount Miguel can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1235th, while El Capitan is ranked 357th).
Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 17 points. That was a full 58.6% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 20th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Satari Jay, who scored eight points.
Mount Miguel struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as El Capitan pulled down 12 offensive rebounds.
El Capitan was led to victory by Keira Heinricy and Paige Worthem. Heinricy scored 18 points along with seven rebounds, while Worthem scored 17 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Emily Sample was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with three steals.
Mount Miguel has not been sharp recently, as they've lost ten of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-18 record this season. As for El Capitan, their win bumped their record up to 12-9.
Mount Miguel will head out on the road to square off against Helix at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Helix will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak. El Capitan won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Mt. Carmel at 11:30 a.m. on January 20th. Mt. Carmel is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road.
