The Cheney Cardinals waltzed into their contest on Monday with 11 straight wins but they left with 12. They came out on top against Independent by a score of 75-65. Given Cheney's advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 26th, while Independent is ranked 87th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Independent's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sir Ryan Dennis, who scored 15 points along with six assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Henderson, who scored 16 points along with four steals.
Cheney pushed their record up to 13-2 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.2 points per game. As for Independent, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cheney's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Trinity Academy on February 9th. Cheney knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matches -- so hopefully Trinity Academy likes a good challenge. As for Independent, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Garden Plain at 7:30 p.m. on February 6th. Independent is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 58.5 points per game this season.
