Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Woods Cross to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jesse Simmons, who threw for 221 yards and two TDs on only ten passes, and also punched in one score on the ground. Simmons' passing game has become a key predictor of the Wildcats' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Teiyon Halbasch helped Simmons out on the ground, picking up 104 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Woods Cross didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Halbasch and Wyatt Hunter.
Meanwhile, Brighton didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Olympus on Friday, but they still walked away with a 14-10 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Bengals.
Woods Cross better keep an eye on Staton Gutierrez. He was instrumental in Brighton's win, rushing for 91 yards and a pair of TDs. They also got a significant boost from Ryce Palepoi, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 86 yards.
Brighton's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB four times. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Jaxon Nettleton and Samuel Tauvao, who each picked up 1.5 sacks apiece. Nettleton was another major factor on D, picking up 1.5 sacks and making three total tackles (3.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception.
Brighton's win bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Woods Cross, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.
Woods Cross was taken down by Brighton 44-7 when the teams last played back in October of 2023. Thankfully for the Wildcats, Jack Johnson (who threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns while completing 72.1% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
