It was a proper cat-fight when Lyons took on Ellsworth on Friday. The Lions were dealt a 50-3 loss at the hands of the Bearcats. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas football rankings (they are ranked 209th, while the Bearcats are ranked 78th).
Even if they lost, Lyons' defensive line still kept up the pressure with 4.5 sacks. Derek Alvidrez refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. Lyons got some further help from Alvidrez: he picked up 1.5 sacks and made seven total tackles (4.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Southeast of Saline took their matchup on Friday with ease, bagging a 58-6 win over Kingman. Fans of the Trojans have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.
Southeast of Saline's win came from a few key players Lyons will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Grady Gebhardt, who rushed for 128 yards and three scores on only eight carries, and also picked up 70 receiving yards and one touchdown. His longest rush was for an impressive 63 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Gannon Jacobson, who threw for 111 yards and a pair of TDs on only ten passes.
Southeast of Saline was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 290 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 166 rushing yards in five consecutive games dating back to last season.
Southeast of Saline didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Malachi Hopkins led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself.
Southeast of Saline's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Lyons, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-4.
