The Taft Wildcats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They took a hard 47-28 fall against Chavez. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Taft of the 51-45 loss they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Taft lost, one person who can't be blamed is Shelby Gregory. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points along with nine rebounds. Alaysia Taylor was another key contributor, scoring six points along with 12 rebounds and three steals.
Even though they lost, Taft smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Chavez only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Among those leading the charge was Hannah Diaz, who scored 21 points along with four blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Lopez, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Taft has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost nine of their last 11 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Chavez, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Taft will square off against Wasco at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Wasco is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak. As for Chavez, they will head out on the road to face off against Kennedy at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
