With a playoff win on the line, Lincoln rose to the challenge on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Washington Eagles as they made off with an 11-5 victory. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Branson Derrington made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. Lincoln is 3-1 when Derrington posts two or more runs, but 12-14 otherwise.
In other batting news, Lincoln got a massive performance out of Nicholas Chiu, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Chiu is becoming a predictor of the Mustangs' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 9-15 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Everett Carvalho, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs and one double.
The win made it two in a row for Lincoln and bumps their season record up to 15-15. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Washington, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-18.
As of now, neither Lincoln nor the Eagles have any future games scheduled.
