Versailles gave Marion Local all it could handle, leading 19-7 late in the third quarter before the Flyers mounted a comeback. The Ohio powerhouse took a 20-19 lead with three minutes left in the game and sealed the win with a late interception.
Head coach Tim Goodwin, who has been on the Flyers' sideline since 1999, has compiled 331 career victories in 379 games and has led Marion Local to 15 state championships.
The streak began at the start of the 2021 season with a 31-6 win over
Wapakoneta in the first of four straight 16-0 campaigns.
The Flyers' average margin of victory during this stretch is more than 36 points per game and includes 37 shutouts. In 2022, Marion Local allowed just 39 points all season and had a streak of six straight shutouts.
Marion Local has won four straight state championships, dominating the opposition by a combined total of 168-13 in those contests. The Flyers' last loss came in 2020, ending a near-perfect season in the state final against
New Bremen.
The Flyers are off to a 6-0 start this season, outscoring opponents 261-40. They are currently the top-ranked team in the Division VII state rankings.
