The Capuchino Mustangs will venture away from home to challenge the Carlmont Scots at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Capuchino will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.
Capuchino took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Menlo-Atherton a 4-0 shutout.
Not much got past Declan Mendel, who gave up just three hits and racked up ten Ks to keep Menlo-Atherton off the board. Mendel has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Capuchino let Anakin Manuel and Billy Ferreira run wild. Manuel got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI, while Ferreira went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Carlmont had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 12-8. Carlmont's win was all the more impressive since the Tigers were averaging only 3.76 runs allowed on the season.
Jason Tofigh made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Tofigh was even better at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Carlmont: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grant Goetz, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of John Dunne, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
Carlmont always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .590. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Capuchino's record now sits at 11-9. As for Carlmont, the victory got them back to even at 9-9.
Capuchino came up short against Carlmont in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, falling 5-1. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
