Salmaan Abdi and Dedrick Vanloo did most of the damage at the plate: Abdi went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run, while Vanloo went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base. Abdi is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Ahndrei Agsunod was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, KIPP King got the win against Impact Academy of Arts & Technology last Friday by a conclusive 19-5. Considering the Lions have won five matches by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Gabriel Acevedo made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Acevedo was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double.
In other batting news, Xavier Gardley was a standout: he got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for KIPP King: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Richard Huerta, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.
KIPP King was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .323 or higher in nine consecutive games.
KIPP King has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.8 runs over those games. As for Mare Island Tech Academy, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-6.
Mare Island Tech Academy might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from KIPP King in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Griffins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
