East Laurens has gone a perfect 9-0 against Northeast recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Falcons will venture away from home to square off against the Raiders at 4:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
It was a Battle of the Birds when East Laurens took on Montgomery County on Wednesday. The Falcons put the hurt on the Eagles with a sharp 15-8 victory. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by six runs or more this season.
Cade Oliver was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, earning one run and two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Konner Oneal was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with one home run, three stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in February. Nollan Scott was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Northeast). They were the clear victors by a 21-13 margin over Jefferson County on Wednesday.
Like East Laurens, Northeast also got a great game from a two-way player: Zavier Hutchings. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Hutchings is becoming a predictor of Northeast's success: when he allows at most three earned runs the team is 2-1 (and 7-15 when he doesn't). Hutchings was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Northeast got a massive performance out of Zekendall Williams, who went 2-for-5 with five stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Williams has become a key player for the Raiders: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 4-16 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Evans, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with six stolen bases and three runs.
Northeast kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
The win was the third in a row for East Laurens, bringing their record up to 11-14. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Northeast, their record is now 9-16.
East Laurens took their win against Northeast in their previous matchup on Tuesday by a conclusive 12-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Falcons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
